Amazon Synopsis:
'When Richard Benson was growing up he felt like the village idiot with O'levels' glowing. School reports aren't much help when you're trying to help a sow give birth, or drive a power harrow in a straight line without getting half the hedgerow stuck in the tines. He left Yorkshire to work as a journalist in London, but returned when his dad called with the news that they were going to have to sell the family farm, and, in so doing, leave the home and livelihood that the Bensons had worked for generations. This is not only a moving personal account, but also one that reflects a profound change in rural life.'

Coming from a farming family, I bought this for my mum, then I read it and am now passing it on to her! I really enjoyed it, although it was different to what I was expecting. I thought it was about how the farm had been turned around, brought back from the brink of collapse through different means. The reality of the book is much harsher and more gritty than that. I think I may have to set a 'bleeper' on it for my mum, to blank out all the swearing!
Written simply yet movingly, a good read.

Happy Reading!

I gave this book to my mum for Christmas, she got about two-thirds through it and gave up, just not enjoying it. When I read it, I must admit it was very different to what I expected, and wasn't sure if it would be her cup of tea. Ah well, isn't it great we all like different things!

Apologies, this appears to be yet another book whose journal entry got eaten by my computer/the internet gremlins way back when it arrived here. I think at one point I was interested in reading it, but re-reading the covernotes and being extremely strict about the height of my TBR mountain range have changed my mind so it's going on the available list
