I believe Margaret Atwood to be a supreme wrter, and this book is sheer excellence. Margaret Atwood's use of language is truly remarkable, and I am amazed more and more as I continue to read her work. Her characters are fantastic: it's extremely difficult to tell what is a fabricated part of a character, and what has come directly from Atwood's autobiography.

As for this book, I found it in Omaha, used, for a pretty cheap price, and I really couldn't resist. That being said, I've had it for a short while now and I'm just getting around to registering it.

Multiple stories all occur at once in this book. You have the memoirs of an aging remnant of a family who once had a powerful name in Canada. But also there is the story of two lovers, which is more or less independent of the rest of the story, or so it might seem first. And within this, you will find several science fiction fantasies created by the lovers. What you are left with is a story within a story within a story. This is truly a masterpiece.

I mailed this book to another Book Crosser, gailflig, today. She has the really awesome goal of trying to trade books with a Book Crosser in every state, which I think is fabulous. I am her first Iowa contact, and I wish her good luck in finding members from all of the other states!
