This book was written as a sequel to the old Daphne du Maurier classic, "Rebecca", that Hitchcock later made into a feature film. I would suggest you read "Rebecca" before you read this book, but I think this book is written well enough that you could still follow along without problems if you don't. If you've read "Rebecca" and you liked it, or if you like Daphne du Maurier you will like this book. It answers some of the unanswered questions at the end of "Rebecca" and also gives you a slightly different perspective for "Rebecca".
