I originally bought this book for my husband, who read and enjoyed it. When I heard that Barack Obama might run for President in 2008, I finally got around to reading it myself. This thoughtful, insightful memoir was written long before Obama became a U.S. Senator, and it's certainly interesting to read about his background and the forces that have motivated him throughout his career and his life. Personally, I would be thrilled to have a President who could so skillfully and movingly communicate his values and beliefs. It remains to be seen whether Obama will actually run, but this memoir is worth reading regardless for its unique perspectives and fascinating personal history.

I plan to offer this book as a bookring for anyone else interested in learning more about Barack Obama.

I was really impressed with Senator Obama's background after reading this. He has been poor and middle class. He is truly a self-made man and was not born into privilege. He has lived in many places in the world. All of this is a great background for someone who may lead the United States. Reading some of his thoughts, questions, introspections, etc I couldn't help but think that he is very deep and seeks to understand life from other people's perspectives. I was also impressed with his values and priorities - he quit a prestigious job in New York to do community organizing in Chicago for much less money. After completing Harvard Law School, he choose to open a law practice helping with community groups, housing, discrimination, civil rights, etc. Anyone who has gone to Harvard, much less edited the Harvard Law Review, could have gone to work for a big firm making a lot of money.

Sorry I kept this book for so long- it was a great read but life outside of reading got in the way of me finishing it sooner. What an interesting personal history Barack has! Not only does this book chronicle his life but also makes you think of your own and the climate of America throughout his life. Sending off to Lorelei03 tomorrow. Thanks to Genevalove for sharing and to MysteryMish for helping it travel to me.

Wow! I am so sorry that I did not register this book as caught when it first arrived. My oversight - apologies.

I have been having a very hard time reading anything since a death in my family this January - which is SO WEIRD for me as I have been a crazy voracious reader my whole life. Anyway, I promise to read and release within the next week.

Caught!

Thank you for returning this book me. Sadly Obama is no longer our president, and our democracy is facing an existential crisis. :(

When I saw this book at the meet-up I thought about sending it to my sister-in-law to read, even though she is a Republican (she is not totally unreasonable). Then I see that it started out as a bookring. I have sent a PM to Genevalove about it.

Journal Entry 20 by KateKintail at Burke, Virginia USA on Sunday, January 21, 2018
I saw this at the BCinDC meetup today. I didn't go home with it, but I read a copy in 2007 and wanted to leave my review here:

What a beautiful book! It was so interesting to hear about his background, family and so many of his defining moments. Elements will stick in my memory for a while, I'm sure. I did tear up a few times, though that's not saying much because I cry over everything, LOL.

I was especially moved by the speech he gave at the DNC that is included in the audiobook. I remember sitting in awe as I listened to him give it, and all the feelings of optimism and pride for my country rushed through me all over again while re-listening. I think I need a copy of it to listen to whenever I'm feeling particularly angry with the state of the country :-)

I think I actually liked The Audacity of Hope better... but I'm not really a biography/memoir girl, so that's probably why. Even so, I absolutely loved this.

Journal Entry 21 by wing6of8wing at Rockville, Maryland USA on Sunday, February 25, 2018
I just saw Squeaky's note from earlier that the book does not need to be returned to Genevalove. Since it is sitting on my desk and I have just now unearthed it again, I will forward it to someone to read.
