Purchased by DH on business.....he says it is a brilliant book! To be read and then released - destination unknown

Again, a book by an author new to me. Purchased at an airport, by DH, handed down to me to read. It was interesting and the plot was something different. However, why is it that there is something which is always annoying? The author consistently made his hero phonetically sound out words phonetically and spelled it out. Haiti was Hi ee tee, almost every new word was done that way. Ok....great for pedants, but I dont think I am going to use the word for black voodoo magic (bo kor) very often, so it really doesnt matter if it is pronounced right, does it?
