Looking forward to read this book. Having minored in African studies in college, I really enjoy African fiction.
Looks interesting, thanks for sharing.
This was a powerful book, with an ending that was a complete gut-punch. I'm quite interested to see the movie that was made from this book, which won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film a few years ago. The lead character, Tsotsi, is a thug and the lens through which the author examines apartheid in South Africa and the lives that people lead. In the end, the book is a depressing one, with little optimism for the future.

I tried to watch the film of this recently, but couldn't get into it. After reading this, I will definitely be giving it another try. This is a powerful, if ultimately depressing book, the ending of which I wasn't expecting at all.
Thank you, msjoanna.
Thank you, msjoanna.
Received today as part of a BookObsessed.com book relay. Thanks.
As msjoanna says, a complete gut punch of an ending, and indeed, it does not show much hope for the future. But I think in the end, the character of Tsotsi has had some redemptive moments and it shows there is hope for people like him.
The book is headed off to Greece, where feltre has chosen it as a prize in my monthly RABCK drawing.
