Born within a year of each other and in the same North Carolina country, Mayme and Katie had grown up in two separate worlds. Mayme was a member of a slave family, and her future held nothing but slavery and hardship. Katie's future was bright with promise - a Southern family's genteel plantation life surrounded by books and music and culture.
Then came the Emancipation Proclamation and the horrors of a nation at war with itself. By the war's concluison, death and destruction had fallen on Katie's Rosewood Plantation home and on Myme's salve quarters. What would the future bring to them now?

I'm going to share this book as a "Ray it Forward." I borrowed the idea from crrcookie as well as her explanation of this type of ray.

Let me try and explain what a "Ray It Forward" is. More or less it is the lazy way for me to set up a common BookRay. Ordinarily a BookRay has a list of participants and it gets mailed down the line to the last person who does whatever they wish with the book. Well, I have no desire to maintain a list so this is what I figure. I’ll find the first person that wants this book and send it to them. I just ask that they pass the book along "BookRay" fashion when they are done with it.

If you are in possession of this book then please look for another BookCrosser to pass it to. Check the wish lists, the forums, a yahoo group, the BookRelay, or offer it at a meeting …whatever way you choose to pass it on is up to you. If it seems that no other BookCrossers want it then send it along its way as a wild release but this should be a last resort.

What are the advantages of Ray it Forward?

Time frame – I ask that you pass the book along in a couple months or so but because there is not a "waiting list" the time is a little more relaxed than a standard BookRay.

Shipping Preferences – Choose your own. If you need to post within your own country then do so. If you choose to send international that is great too. If postal costs are a problem right now then hand it to another BookCrosser at a meeting, release to an OBCZ, ask for postage from the receiver or find some other way to get the book in the hands of another BookCrosser.

***Please note that it would be polite to let the next person know that this is a Ray It Forward book before you pass it along to them so that they will know that they will be expected to pass it on in a couple months.

Less Stress – Please do your best to keep this book moving but I am going to try my hardest not to worry about it anymore as I send it into the world to be enjoyed by as many as is its fate.

Journal Entry 5 by wingJoanazinhawing from Amersfoort, Utrecht Netherlands on Saturday, August 25, 2007
Today I finished this beautiful book. Thank you nikel27 for sending it to me! I loved reading it from the first page till the last. The only sorry thing is the open ending. As far as I can see, this book is the first in a series of books about the 'Shenandoah Sisters', being Mayme and Katie. I hope to be able to read the sequels in order to find out what the future brings for these two brave girls.

Mayme and Katie, the one a black slave girl, the other a white girl, heiress to a plantation. After the War between the States has ended, they end up alike: both with their homes destroyed and their families butchered by passing outlaw Confederate deserters. They support each other, live together at the plantation of Katies parents and try to pick up the pieces. Mayme teaches Katie to survive and Katie teaches Mayme to enjoy music (other then the slave music) and reading. Twice Mayme tries to leave, but both times she is called back by Katie..... or was it by Someone else?

I will offer it at the international forum as a ray it forward book. Let's see who else would like to read this book!

Received the book with thanks, and the nice postcard. Will keep it moving once I'm done with reading. However, I'll keep the card as bookmark, as it acts as a reminder of who has send me books.

Wow... I'm already receiving lots of books and they are going to keep my time occupied.

Journal Entry 8 by bearyfriend from Singapore, Singapore Singapore on Saturday, October 20, 2007
Currently reading another book. Will start on this soon after, and ray-it-forward once I finished reading. No stress...I'll keep the book moving. This JE is just to say I remember this book on the top of my Mount-TBR =)

Journal Entry 9 by bearyfriend from Singapore, Singapore Singapore on Sunday, November 25, 2007
Very light and easy read once started. I've enjoyed reading this book and looking forward to know more about the gals' lives together at the large house and how they handled the plantation all by themselves w/o adults around; What happened after they started their daring plans... Did they managed to fool the adults and lived happily ever after; or were there more problems & adventures awaiting etc...

Shall go search for these below sequels to read as well:

1. A Day to Pick Your Own Cotton
2. The Color of Your Skin Ain't the Color of Your Heart
3. Together Is All We Need

I did a book search, and found another book "Miss Katies Rosewood (Carolina Cousins)". Is this also part of the sequels?

Thanks nikel27 for starting this ray-it-forward, and Joanazinha for letting me read this book. It makes me want to read more about the Shenandoah Sisters' fate and whether did their friendship last.

I'll find another reader interested in this book and keep it moving.

I really enjoyed this book. Two girls from very different backgrounds find themselves orphans. This book was a sad reminder of how different life was for the slaves and the plantation families in the South. I would like to read the sequel(s) to this book to find out what happens to Katie and Mayme.

Thank you nikel27 for starting this ray-it-forward and bearyfriend for sending this book to me. I will be raying-it-forward to Aberpeter in WA. Will post tomorrow.

Journal Entry 14 by Aberpeter from Renton, Washington USA on Friday, January 11, 2008

Journal Entry 15 by Aberpeter from Renton, Washington USA on Monday, January 28, 2008
I had a hard time putting the book down once I started. I was captivated by Katie and Mayme's story and I truely cared about what happened to them. It would be interesting to read other books in this series to discover how the girls continue to live.
