The Mermaid Chair

I enjoyed this book but admit to being somewhat disappointed with some aspects of it. For instance, the main character, Jessie and the monk she encounters, fall for each other without enough convincing detail regarding how and why. In addition, by the end of the book, you feel that the central theme regarding Jessie really represents a mid-life crisis, which perhaps trivializes her experience.
On the positive side, the sub-plot regarding her mother's situation is intriguing, creative, and surprising. It is ironic that at its core is an incredible love-story of devotion while Jessie's is instead a "finding myself" cliche.

I liked this book. I think I would have liked it better if i was a little older but it was still very good.
