Poverty and the lack of one's own space was the reason why not so many women could become great writers. 500 pounds a year would set the woman free, Virginia Woolf proposed. This was a radical proposal back when the book was written (1929), but I don't see why it wouldn't apply even today. Of course the amount of money would have to go up dramatically!
The language of the book doesn't necessarily make an easy read. Woolf used ficitional characters to help argue her thesis through the format of a university lecture. But her feministic voice was clear and strong. You'd get a good glimpse of her philosophy after reading this book.
Note: This book was originally purchased in Manhattan, New York.

My boyfriend found the book at Stockholm University a couple of months ago and didn't bother to read it. I decided to read it and found it very interesting and well-written. Highly recommended. I plan to leave this book somewhere in Stockholm.
