Stephenson’s Confusion was a great follow up to Quicksilver (the book that literally took me 5 months or more to read). The book was a combination of two books following the main characters from Quicksilver as they went their separate ways (on the point of a harpoon tossed into Jack by the lovely Eliza) with chapters cut and pasted into basic chronological order. This made things a bit weird at times, but I think it helped break up some of the LONG tedium that Stephenson tends towards when he is in a descriptive mode.

Stephenson’s style did seem punchier in this book, there was less exposition and more story telling. This could have been because it was broken up as I mention above, but I think more likely it’s just the way the writing was done and how hard his editor smacked his hands with a ruler ;)

The obvious question would be if you can just jump into The Confusion without sitting through Quicksilver. I don’t think so. So much of the story requires that knowledge of things past or it just doesn’t make sense.

Rating: 6.5/10 - I liked it, but there was still a bit too much extra reading required. Stephenson is a fantastic story teller, but he has to get through all the detail and into the story more.
