Picked up tonight at the BookCrossing meet-up in Barrie, at Tim Horton's (Essa Rd/Bryne Dr). Thanks so much for bringing this to pass on, dee ~ I'm just finishing the bookray 'Light On Snow' by the same author and have also previously read 'The Pilot's Wife'. I really enjoy this author's writing style and her interesting story lines. Amazingly, another BCer brought along 'The Weight of Water' by the same author tonight so now I have two more to put on my TBR pile.

I see that it is quite some time since I've had this book, but I was ready for another by Anita Shreve and this one did not disappoint. Her writing pulls me right into the lives of her characters and this one took me to WWII in German-occupied Belgium. An insight into both the innocence and the bravery of men and women from Canada, the U.S.A. and the U.K. who fought against the Germans during this terrible war. Insight as well into the impact of the War on the lives of men, women and children who lived in Belgium during the time of this occupation . . . and with a love story intertwined into the horrors of WWII.

I received this book in the mail today. I love Anita Shreve. What a nice surprise! I THINK it's a surprise! Had I offered you postage or trade? Is it a RABCK? A book-ring? Please let me know so I don't just add it to Mount TBR and let it sit there if I have promised it to someone else!!! LOL. One of the fun things about having a rotten memory is that I always get surprises! Thank you again, and let me know if I am supposed to do something! (Duh.)

June 28, 2012: Received this e-mail from Starrdust today: "LOL, you are too funny!! :-) This is the book you selected, without knowing it, from the First Sentences Virtual Book Box!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, that clears up the mystery! I love my first sentence and the book attached to it! The First Sentence VBB is a lot of fun, and I'm going to jump at the chance to participate if it comes around again!
From the "goodreads" site (Link Here) to help you decide if you would l ike to choose this book:
"... This tale of impossible love (told with the same narrative grace and keen eye for human emotion that have distinguished all of Anita Shreve's cherished bestsellers) leads us into a harrowing world where forbidden passions have catastrophic consequences.
In a Nazi-occupied Belgian village, Claire Daussois, the wife of a resistance worker, shelters a wounded American bomber pilot in a secret attic hideaway. As she nurses him back to health, Claire is drawn into an affair that seems strong enough to conquer all - until the brutal realities of war intrude, shattering every idea she ever had about love, trust, and betrayal ...
"
Dec 22, 2016: Finally finished, after starting and stopping so many times! Sweet and sad, a story of loyalty and betrayal, but above all, love.
