I have to admit that even though I've enjoyed Jane Eyre and Rebecca, gothic style isn't at the top of my list of favorite novels. With Thirteenth Tale, I suspected I would grow irritated enough with a drawn-out plot and dry characters to stop reading part way through, but I was surprised.

I disliked Atonement, one reason being that I felt the author had tricked and manipulated me at the end, and the trick didn't 'work'. Thirteenth Tale had its tricks, but they were deftly handled. The plot was like stitching that keeps doubling back on itself and twisting, crossing one's eyes upclose, yet upon stepping back/completion turns into an intricately designed piece of cloth.

I ended up with three copies of this book. Sending this hard cover to JDT who had the novel on her wish list.

Enjoy!

A lovely surprise in my mailbox from BC friend KimKerry!

I've heard good things about this one, love the artistic endpapers on this nice-quality hardcover, and am further intrigued by your journal entry.

I'm still smiling - thanks so much!!

What an engrossing read, one I enjoyed more than I expected!

Atmospheric, intelligent, yet accessible writing style. Creative elements of ghosts, magic, gothic settings, mystery, twins added to the reading experience .

I was caught up in the story and complex/interesting characters and couldn't wait to back to it often, over the 3-4 days of a wonderful, compelling read!

Thanks again, KimKerry!
