Received in yesterdays post from Geetheflea as part of a trade (I'm hoping to get "A Pale View of Hills" to post tomorrow!
Thank you!
Thank you!
It took me a month to read this book. I found it a struggle. A book I definitely could put down! I think there was great humour in parts and some good ideas woven into a story that explores family, friendship, cultural and racial identity etc over a number of years.
However, I found Zadie Smith lacked a good editor. I could have happily taken a pair of scissors to great swathes of this novel. There is perhaps, a fine line between epic novel and a rambling sleep inducing one. Over all I found this more the latter; which was a shame as a lot of what she was getting at and the characters, were cleverly created.
I was asked for this by Qimp which is where it is going next. Hope you enjoy it. I found while I was reading this a number of London bus tickets which had been used as markers. As there is some discussion about bus tickets or "Little Alibies" I've left them in place. Enjoy!

I received this book in the mail a few days, but until now, I had no time to journal it, I apologise. After the many good reviews I heard and read, your not-so-good review makes me all the more curious. Thank you very much for sending this book, isisjem!
It took me quite a while (even had to read a book for my reading group in between), but I really enjoyed reading this book. I only wish I could have been drawn in more, but there was not one single character to identify with. Still, I really recommend this funny and original view on the multicultural world we live in.
