The book is a universe in itself. As such, peopled with so many characters, it requires careful and slow reading. This not a book for skimming. It is far too layered for that. I have to say that the initial characters were far more interesting than the ones introduced later. Thankfully, the story widens to encompass a huge background which makes up for the later lack of characterisation. It may also be that I was not sympathetic to the characters and that they were really rather well drawn. A different inherent personality to mine will probably find they have greater empathy. I'm also writing my own novel so it may be that I'm just jealous of his ability to produce 200,000 plus words.
