Coleman Silk has a secret. But it's not the secret of his affair, at seventy-one, with a woman half his age. And it's not the secret of his alleged racism, which provoked the college witchhunt that cost him his job. Coleman's secret is deeper, and lies at the very core of who he is, and he has kept it hidden from everyone for fifty years. Set in 1998, with the backdrop of the impeachment of a president, The Human Stain shows us an America where conflicting moralities and ideological divisions result in public denunciations and houndings, and where innocence is not always a good enough excuse.
Bought in January after I saw the film at my parents' place. I'm a long-time fan of Philip Roth and this story was pretty impressive; I expect that the book will improve on the movie.
I wouldn't have registered it unread, but catsalive mentioned she was looking out for Philip Roth (never read Portnoy's Complaint?!! If only I had a copy to lend) and I'm sure she'll like this one.
I want it back, OK? Actually, I'll offer this as a bookring too :-)
Passed to catsalive over a lovely lunch in the park with a bevy of beautiful BookCrossers.

I'm just not in the right frame of mind to read this, not psychologically prepared. I've tried a few times but I just can't get moving. Of the little I've read I can see that it is excellent writing. Maybe I'll read another Roth next year.
Returned to its owner tonight. Thanks, xoddam.

Thanks, catsalive. I'll read it one day and then I'll offer it to you again. Good to see you.
