Plot
Olwen Pendennis inherits the position of Keeper of the light after her
parents die. She is cared for by her only companion, Guardian, who is a
robot. Together they live on Isis the fourth planet of Ra in the milky Way
Galaxy. It is a class B-one planet (able to be adapted to support human
life). Olwen takes the news of the arrival of a settlement ship from Earth
with great difficulty. She has grown up on Isis alone and feels that a
colonization ship will destroy the planet; however, as the craft lands, she
finds herself curious about the settlers. Guardian insists that Olwen wears
a protective suit when she meets the colonists from Earth. One of the
settlers, mark, becomes friends with Olwen, and she shows him around the
planet. One day he travels to Olwen's dwelling to surprise her, but he is
the one surprised. His reaction to her causes him to step back and fall off
a cliff. His accident prompts Olwen to do gown to the settlement without her
protective suit. The settlers are shocked by her natural appearance;
Guardian had genetically altered her to make her safe for the planet as she
was growing up. The settlers attempt to make a conscious effort to look
beyond her appearance; however, Olwen still feels the distance between them: physical appearance as well as the ability to move with freedom over the entire planet. She decides that it would be for the best if Guardian would
make them a new home in the mountains away from the settlement.
