MORBID TASTE FOR BONES (Brother Cadfael Mysteries)

Picked this up at the Book Thing. This is the first book in the Brother Cadfael series.
From the cover -
Soon after his arrival at the Benedictine monastery of Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael finds himself on a mission to his Welsh homeland. Acting as translator, he must help his prior obtain the bones of Saint Winifred, which now rest in a small village grave.
The Welsh villagers are loath to part with the relics of a martyr said to have miraculous powers, but before an agreement can be reached, the one villager most outspoken in his dissent is found murdered. His lovely daughter is determined to find the killer - and Cadfael is eager to help.
Carefully, kindly, and with cunning enough to please any mystery fan, the good monk sets out to solve his first case. In the process, his heart is touched by two pairs of star-crossed lovers, and he just may effect a miracle of his own.

Hmmm, I've always heard good things about this series, but for me this book was ok, just not great. Maybe the series improves as it goes along; I've got 2 of the next 3 books, so I'll be continuing with it, eventually. Maybe the book was just too far outside my own experience, set in the 12th century, dealing with saints and monks in England...
Brother Cadfael is an intriguing character, a man of the world who becomes a monk later in life, he's experienced much more than any of the other brothers. I will look forward to learning more about him.
Sending this to Glade1, as promised in the wishlist tag game. Hope she enjoys it!
