From the back cover:
"First there is the incredibly adventurous twenty-one-month trek across rugged mountain and desolate plain to the mysterious heartland of Tibet; then the fascinating picture, rich in amazing detail, of life in Lhasa. . . . Final chapters draw an intimate portrait of the youthful Dalai Lama."
-The Atlantic Monthly
"It tells one of the grandest and most incredible adventure stories I have ever read, compounded of the infallibly exciting elements of mountain climbing, daring escapes, life in secret, forbidden Tibet, and encounters with extraordinary people."
-Santha Rama Rau, The New York Times Book Review
Purchased at the Marshfield Public Library "Twice Read Books" sale.
The tone of this book is so straightforward and conversational, but there is a lot of fascinating information hidden in the simple narrative. I had to laugh a little at how casually Harrer related the months and miles of hardship involved in finally reaching Lhasa. His impressions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as a young man in Tibet were particularly interesting to me.
I haven't seen the film, but I must say that I could not picture Brad Pitt as I read this, no matter how hard I tried. =P
