'A compelling and profoundly moving account of one of the most tragic events of pioneer America.'

Journal Entry 2 by amberC from Darwin, Northern Territory Australia on Wednesday, January 23, 2008
This is the story of the events of 1847 and the fate of the Donner party through the eyes of James Reed and his daughter Patty. Exiled from the party after he accidentally killed one of its members, Reed made it over the Sierras before snow locked what is now called Donner Pass. His family, however, did not. Along with more than 80 other stranded emigrants, they erected crude cabins below the summit and settled in for a long winter of hunger, cold, madness, and cannibalism, chronicled by 8 year old Patty Reed.

The parts of Reed riding around California fighting the Mexicans and trying to drum up support for a rescue party get a bit tedious. Patty's accounts of the immigrants mountain camp are much more interesting.

Arrived safe and sound to my door on a very wintery, wet day. Thanks so much sally, I'm looking forward to reading it. I'm reading a lot of pioneering books lately so this fits the bill well.

Very well written. Good descriptions of language and scenery etc. An engrossing read which drew me in from the start. How incredible, this is based on a true and very well known event in American history. The things people lived through! Reading this you can fully understand the sentiment behind Thanksgiving.
