This book was a part of my childhood since my father was a Kipling fanatic. It is the story of a boy of English descent who grew up in the time when the British ruled India. Kim is brought up the first part of his life as an Indian and when it is found out that he isn't, he is sent to school to learn to be English. The story tells how he runs away and becomes the chela {disciple} of a wise lama who is on a quest for a cleansing sacred river. In addition his life is complicated by his involvement in the Great Game, the network of information providers that report to the representatives of the British government. This particular edition has many explanatory footnotes which add a lot to the book.
