Please don't be put off by the film!!!!!!
I first read this book about 6 years ago and fell in love with the gentle humour and comforting descriptiveness of the narrative. From the beginning when an old man asks to have the pea reinserted in to his ear so that he can once again not hear his wife moan at him you know this is something you can chuckle along with. The characters are warm and inviting, carrying you with them, they go forth into the backdrop of war and hostility bravely and seemingly honourably.
If you do enjoy this please read the trilogy starting with 'The war of Don Emmanuel's nether parts' which in my opinion are the superior reads.

Journal Entry 3 by aljan from St Briavels, Gloucestershire United Kingdom on Thursday, September 28, 2006
Spotted this book near the sugar counter in Tesco's Chepstow. As soon as I saw the book in such an unlikely place I just knew it was going to be a "Bookcrossing" book. This is the first book I've found actually "in the wild". The other three I've caught have either been in a charity shop or in geocache sites.

Not sure I'll read this book as I've seen the film and I have a lot of books to get through before I get around to this one, so I'll probably release it again.
