picked up for release in a September release challenge, only I started reading it and missed the challenge!
A gem of a book. A sequence of short stories about peculiar moments in the history of the British Isles.
Every one a teasure.
I'm putting this into BookGroupMan's 3rd Birthday Bookbox. Enjoy.

This looks like a fun read, left in my homecoming bookbex..thank you :)
Hi Lellie, long time no see. This book has been hanging around for such a long time, from my 3rd BC birthday, i'm now in my 7th year! It's my DD's birthday today and we are popping to Felixstowe if the rain stops...I might have a look in yours and my favourite labyrinthine bookshop :)

After a slow start - I will explain - I really liked this book. I was suspicious initially because of the title gimmick and the worry about a feminist agenda; for shame. But in the end I loved most of the stories, cleverly built around a historical incident, a 'factual' record, or a real person, and woven with research from the period to make very believable little vignettes. Most, if not all (Acts of Union?), feature women or girls being mistreated, misunderstood, or otherwise victims of circumstance. I especially liked 'Come, Gentle Night' about Ruskin's new wife - very topical with the TV series Desperate Romantics. In a book full of great insight and pathos I picked out this one quote which I really liked, although there are probably quotable passages on every page! About marriage, '...a miraculous yoking of opposites. Whatever may be flawed, or lacking, in each of us, the other will supply.'

Meetup book.
I too was intrigued by the title when I saw this book at the Ipswich meet. Added to 'mount to be read'.
I liked the concept of this book, using odd moments from history as inspiration for short stories. I read a few of them and whilst I found them quite readable I was left wanting to move on to something with more substance, so I have. I will probably take this to the next meet at the Layer Fox.
