I picked this up in waterstones - just to look at, and couldn't resist.

Amazon Editorial Review:
'On my desk sits a beautiful engraving, published in another century, that promises me: "Out of the chaos the future emerges in harmony and beauty." Promises and prayers contain their own kinds of answer, as consecrated aspiration. I need this one now...' In her new essay collection, written in the aftermath of September 11th, the author of High Tide In Tucson and The Poisonwood Bible brings to us out of one of history's darker moments an extended love song to the world we still have. From its opening parable gleaned from recent news about a lost child saved in an astonishing way, the book moves on to consider a world of surprising and hopeful prospects ranging from an inventive conservation scheme in a remote jungle to the backyard flock of chickens tended by the author's small daughter

reserved for famulus when I have finished.

These thoughtful and sometimes poignant essays are written with the same beautiful language as the authors best selling novels. In these essays Barbara Kingsolver tackles some enormous subjects such as genetic engineering, the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and America's jingoistic response to them, de-forestation, gardening, chicken keeping, food miles, motherhood and civil rights. I found the essays entitled "Letter to a daughter at thirteen" and "Letter to my mother" particularly wonderful, and they were my favourites by far. I really enjoyed reading most of these essays - but if I am honest there were two or three in the first half of the book that were very scientific and I do not have any kind of science brain - and so they interested me less than they might of done otherwise. All the essays though are superbly written, and the majority I did find fascinating, enthralling and often entertaining.

This will be on its way to famulus soon.

Received from Heaven Ali as a RABCK to celebrate her amazing achievement in releasing 2000 books - well done Ali, and many, many thanks for another Kingsolver book for me to read.

Journal Entry 5 by Famulus from Hertford, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Friday, May 21, 2010
This is a very thoughtful series of essays compiled in response to 9/11, although the subject matter is much more wide-ranging. For anyone who's enjoyed Kingsolver's beautiful novels, this will provide a fascinating background to the world-view that clearly underlies all her work.

I'm now setting this up as a ring - so far, only one taker, but will add new members if and when they ask.

Please:

Let us know when you receive the book, and when you send it on.

Recieved with thanks and added to my TBR pile. I have a few other rings/rays ahead of this one. As I am the only one in the ring so far this book has gone to the bottom of the pile, so it may be a while before I get to it...
