This is the story of an Chinese woman who has long since settled in the USA and her relationship with her Americanized daughter who has never seemed to understand the woman within her mother. It is only after Ruth reads her mother's life story, which has been written down for posterity, that she begins to see the great struggles and difficult life her mother has survived.
Acquired through Freecycle. As I've already read this I'm taking it to a bookcrossers' meet up in Wendover Woods on Saturday.

This was a lovely beautifully told story! It is the 2nd book by Amy Tan I have read (the other was The Hundred Secret Senses), and I will definately have to look out for more.
I loved the way the story went from what happened years ago to the present day. I kept feeling though as if the 'old' China was hundreds of years ago - not just the 1920's.
