This wasn't up to Gregory's "The Other Boleyn Girl" although I still liked it. It's the story of Katherine of Aragon who was raised to be Queen of England since a small girl, her brief time as Princess of Wales married to Prince Aurthur, the long dangerous period following Arthur's death and her final ascendancy when his brother Henry VIII makes her his queen. I'm very familiar with the story and enjoyed Gregory's exploration of the Moorish influence on Katherine in education and sensibilities - something I haven't ran across in fiction or historical research.

Journal Entry 4 by sweetybeans from Cottage Grove, Oregon USA on Monday, January 29, 2007
i finished this book a week ago and forgot to journal it. so i know that this book was written after the other boylen girl and the queens fool etc.. but i wish that they had been written in order (or i could have read them in order...) but i will just read them again :)

that aside i always love her books. this one i liked the story and the facts behind catalina's story, but sometimes the thoughts were repetative. i liked how strong catalina was in this book (esp. since she seemed so weak in the other boylen girl).

part of me wished the ending included more of her trial and the leading up to the trial, but then on the other hand it might take away from the book.

i sent the book on it's way back to the us a couple of days ago. sorry about the delay.
i enjoyed it very much...it made me want to read "the other boleyn girl" again...which i'll have to do pretty soon i guess.
again i'm glad not to have lived in those times where marriages were made for the sake of power or money. interesting was also to read about the very different ways of living in england and spain.

It's been awhile since I've read some historical fiction, and I'm wondering why I waited so long, because I really enjoyed this book. Having known nothing previously about Katherine of Aragon--only that she was one of the wives of Henry VIII--it was an enlightening look into that period of European history. I definitely want to read more of Gregory's books now.

Lane1088 already had the book and thecrookedfrog was unreachable by multiple PMs and ISOs, so the book is on its way to rrrcaron. Thanks for hosting, sweetybeans!

I received this book in the mail yesterday. I have a few to read beforehand, but it shouldn't take long.

Definitely, not my favorite. I usually love to read historical fiction, especially from this time period in English history, but I felt that this book fell a bit short. I realize it is categorized as fiction - but I like to know what is based on truth and what is completely made up by the author.
I did enjoy the first half of the book but felt that the second half dragged on a bit. This was my first Gregory read, while this one wasn't great, I think I still might read one of her other books.

On its way back to sweetybeans today! Thanks so much for organizing!!
