The Reverend Hector Gillean is a ghost. At the start of the last century he built a ship and sailed west from the Hebrides to search for a promised land in the heart of the Canadian wilderness. His great-grandson retraces the voyage, 200 years later, through three generations of family history.

As part of the Virtual Book Box, I chose this book knowing only its first line: "We met, my great-grandson and I, more than a century after my death." Certainly an intriguing beginning. Looks to be about a ghost. Thanks, I think I'm going to enjoy this one.

Journal Entry 6 by Brookler at Powell River, British Columbia Canada on Sunday, December 12, 2010
This was a wonderful read and a lovely surprise. I had no idea this was actually a historical novel nor that it was all about Canada! The use of ghostly ancestors to tell the story was delightfully entertaining. Although I strongly disagree with the author's negative slant towards the Québécois and pessimistic view that immigrants to Canada will only see their hopes and dreams dashed, I still found this a very enjoyable book. Although this book is all about journeys of the past and present, it is certainly not a travel book. The details of daily life throughout the past 200 years are portrayed so effectively as to bring understanding to forgotten ways of thinking.
