Journal Entry 4 by WistfulDragon from Streatham, Greater London United Kingdom on Sunday, February 18, 2007
Picked up as an orphan from the meet. It's destiny - to be released again, don't know where, don't know when. And with my boyfriend's release techniques (no release notes, keep a box in the car and release at will) you might never find out where or when, depending on a future journal entry!

Picked up at The Clarence yesterday lunchtime. This book has been from meet to meet but has anyone read it? It can sit on my bookshelf for a time and I hope to get to read it soon.

Just got it, thanks again 666Izzy.
Just noticed that there isn't a synopsis anywhere in the previous JE's so here goes:
"Whales have always been the life-force of Angelus, a small town on the south coast of Western Australia. Their annual passing defines the rhythms of a life where little changes, and the town depends on their carcasses. So when the battle begins on the beaches outside their town, and when Queenie Cookson, a local girl, joins the Greenies to make amends for the crimes of her whaling ancestors, it can only throw everything into chaos."

I've read some books by this author and, so far, he never failed to surprise me.
This little book packs quite a punch!
If you're into some light reading with an upbeat tale this novel is not for you.
Winton delivers a very tight plot with some very engaging characters, all wrapped in his great choice of words, creating so much more than a family saga or a manifest to stop the whaling.
The plight of Queenie and her new found friends is only matched by the plight of some of the characters themselves, a fight for a change in the ways of men (and in their own ways).
The descriptions of the whaling town are quite vivid and one can almost feel the smells, textures and rough ways of its people.
The whaling scenes are also well presented by the author and they bring the reader into the thick of it with ease.
As we wade deeper into the novel we (the reader) can't help but start to have a sense of foreboding and it only builds up as we go deeper and deeper.
Nathaniel, Daniel, the priest, Queenie and even Cleve seem to be at a loss and unsure, even when they're trying their hardest to do right, a lot of good intentions come out wrong and turn tragic (just like in real life). Just like the whales that strand themselves on the beach, against their better instincts, also the characters seem to strand themselves in life with no real option for the change they desperately want to make in themselves and in others.
A poignant ending that remains with the reader well after the reading is done.
