I thought it was beautiful, one of the best books I have read. She thought it was nasty. We bought this one in Korea.

D-face kindly passed this book on to me so I can read it for a work book club thingy. Which will be interesting, as this is a bunch of people who take not doing things seriously very seriously, if you follow me. Well, that's what lawyers are like ;)

Thanks D-face, I'll release this somewhere interesting (or else at Starbucks!) once I'm done with it.

Interesting. Such a beautiful style - I love the way Nabokov plays with words (and it's also an integral part of the story). And the story itself is so disturbing in so many ways.

A lot of our discussion about this book at our work book club centred on whether you can trust Humbert's telling of the story. I guess that's not surprising when you consider that we are, after all, a bunch of lawyers, and so a lot of our work in the long run involves making an assessment of the believability of someone's story. At a shallow level, I found it amusing that this is a fiction book, and that we were still discussing the "truthfulness" of the narrator. On the other hand, it's definitely an interesting perspective and is central to the book. For me, that is something that helps to display Nabokov's genius in writing this book.
