In 1963, Oe joined a commission to report on the condition of Hiroshima and its victims. At the same time, he and his wife were struggling with the decision whether to let their newborn son die or risk an operation that would leave him permanently brain-damaged.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I plan to leave this by Henry Moore's Nuclear Energy sculpture, on Ellis Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets, probably between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m.
This is near the site of the first self-sustaining, controlled nuclear chain reaction, which occurred in a squash court under the bleachers of the now-demolished Stagg Field.
