Wahoo! I'd recently read all of Trollope's "Barchester" novels, having found some at a hefty discount on book-sale racks, some at full price, and one - Doctor Thorne - at the public library as I couldn't find any copies on sale locally. But yesterday I stopped by Barnes & Noble and found this hardcover edition on their final-sale rack for a mere dollar (ninety cents with my discount card) - hard to beat that!
This one is the third of the series, and is one of my favorites; it introduces us to the upright, sensible, and unambitious Doctor Thorne and his niece Mary, and also introduces the marvelous Miss Dunstable, a patent-medicine heiress, no longer young (at least by period standards - she's around 30 when we first meet her), and of an independent nature and a wondrous wit. Oh, and of course there's a handsome young lord whose parents insist that he must marry money to save the family estate - money such as that in the possession of Miss Dunstable. And, of course, the young lord is in love with a penniless girl. And there are family secrets abounding, and guest appearances by characters from other parts of Barset. Great fun!
The series:
The Warden
Barchester Towers
Doctor Thorne
Framley Parsonage
The Small House at Allington
The Last Chronicle of Barset
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series, with some entertaining tidbits. And there's a 2016 mini-series adaptation.]
