The story takes place in Hong Kong and in parts of mainland China, and features Paul Leibovitz, who lives on a remote island. Paul has cut himself off from most of his family and friends in the belief that if he forms new memories he will erase those of his son, who recently died of cancer. So he sticks to a schedule that allows the creation of no new memories.

But life doesn't work like that, of course. He reluctantly enters the lives of others in an effort to help someone he just met. Which leads to a situation he can't dismiss. He has gradually let a woman in, Christine, and she warns him against involvement. Her history with the Chinese regime has left deep scars. She is afraid for him.

The story reveals some of the situation in China today, many years after the Cultural Revolution. There is a culture of corruption now. Can anyone escape it?

Paul works with a member of a Chinese police force, a longtime friend whose integrity cannot be questioned, and the two find themselves up against a wall. Is it possible to break through it?

In the end, I wondered about the solution. Is it realistic?
