well the final story is infamous now but the other stories create a loving but realistic portrait of ranch life, very easy to read and enjoyable.

Purpleskybaby always brings quality tomes that put my usual cheesy old crap to shame. Many thanks!

When reading fiction about another culture, one is often grateful for the unusual flavour of the prose and the glimpse into that culture's customs. With Annie Proulx one is thrust so uncompromisingly into ranch and prairie life that one is completely immersed in it, her prose as harsh and stark as the dying culture she describes. The night sky is 'punched with bullet holes', a pair of ornate spurs is a symbol of both the frustrated artistry and the cruelty of life. This is not an easy read - there's a world of death, disappointment, injury and misery. But it's also a fascinating look at a struggling culture in its death throes. Good stuff, and I'm grateful for the insight into a culture so alien to me.
