Christy is having a terrible summer. Her boyfriend is serving in the army in war-torn Bosnia, and she's stuck at home looking after her demented grandmother. And to make things worse, a family secret seems to be tearing her father apart. So Christy and her brother decide to try and pry the secret out of their grandmother (a real challenge, given that she has trouble even remembering who they are), and in the process, Christy learns some hard truths about the nature of love.

Kate de Goldi always writes powerfully about big subjects, and this book is no exception. Although I guessed the answer to the mystery pretty early on, that didn't detract from the story, which had enough other strands to it to keep me interested.
