If you are
. a mystery buff
. an Agatha Christie fan
. an occasional Christie reader
. a friend of any of the above
this book is for you, and for all your fortunate friends
THE BEDSIDE, BATHTUB & ARMCHAIR COMPANION TO AGATHA CHRISTIE
is a grand salute to the queen of mysteries, filled with wonderful and surprising things about her books, her characters, the movies and plays based on them, and Dame Agatha herself. Original contributions by over fifty writers celebrate the Christie touch. Take your pick among these intriguing features and speculations to start:
. Surviving an English country weekend - if you had the advice of Hercule Poirot.
. A guide to the Christie poisons, as well as the cruder methods of genteel mayhem.
. Devonshire cream and other recipes for dishes cherished by Christie characters.
. Miss Marple (can it be?) sharing a dark secret in a therapy session.
. The "other" Agatha Christie who wrote romantic novels.
. Two fans revealing what turned them on to Christie.
. The Mousetrap Double-Crostic, and other puzzles.
That's a taste. There's much more - and witty plot summaries of all of Christie's novels, original plays, and many of her short stories (but no endings, of course). These are not only reminders of your own Christie preferences, but a key to some new favorites.
And there's a warm portrait of Agatha Christie herself in the introduction by Julian Symons, the noted British mystery writer and historian of mystery fiction.
This year-round treasury is more than enlightenment and fun - it is also a personal reference work for Christie fans. Besides the fascinating plot summaries, there are lists of all Christie editions now in print (but not counting the more than one hundred translations into other languages), books arranged by featured detective, a list of plays and the contents of short story collections, and a title index.
And the best of movie posters on Christie films.
Lots of other fine illustrations too, and a Christie mystery map!
MaryZee had a lot of books on her BC shelves when she passed. I am planning on sharing most of them with other locals. But I am hanging on to a few that might be more appropriate for other distribution methods. From the looks of it, this might be a good fit if I revive the Bookish Book Box.

Any future reader or recipient of this book is encouraged to leave a journal entry here on the BookCrossing site to let prior readers know the fate of the book. You can make an anonymous entry without joining the BookCrossing movement, but if you are interested in joining, it is a free and spam-free community where your contact information is not shared with others. Best of all, members receive private messages via e-mail from books like this one when those books are journaled, allowing for long-term relationships between books and readers.
Later: This is great fun for Christie fans, with entries on all of her works - including my favorite, The Mysterious Mr. Quin - and on various stage and screen adaptations through the years. There are entertaining bonus items too, from reviews to interviews to a delightful poem by Norma Seibenheller, "The Unread Christie," which points out the desire to save unread one last book by a favorite author, so as not to reach the dreaded "all done" stage. I can relate to that!
