The Passion (Penguin fiction)

I really struggled to get into this book. I just wasn't interested in the life of Henri, Napolean's cook, and I only persevered because so many people rate this very highly.
I enjoyed it more when the story moved to Venice and we met Villanelle. I liked her character and her passion for her city and her lover were intriguing.
These two characters are realistic and fantastical at the same time. The greater emphasis on fantasy at times was a little too much for me, but I enjoyed the passion of their individual relationships.

Jeanette Winterson writes sparely and I expect there were several levels of understanding in this book which I may have missed.
I caught the book in the Belmont Cinema in Aberdeen and plan to release it at my place of work where we share books we have read among colleagues. I shall encourage whoever takes this book to do as I have done - read it and release it.
Thank you for this opportunity.
