In the Taoist tradition there are nine magic words - words of ritual, of self-protection. The last word is Zero, when the way has no power: to Michael Doss, torn between the East and the West, it is a concept which means two ruthless deaths; for Zero is also an assassin, nameless and faceless except to his victims.
