Several months ago at work, Tracy said, "I read an article about people like you--you're a QuirkyAlone!"

Needless to say, I've wanted to read this book ever since. When I first opened it up, I felt like I was "coming home." I was so thrilled to be validated by so many people who "felt the same way" ('resisted compulsory coupledom') and to see the way I felt validated by the printed word. However, as I read on, I did feel as though the "single by choice" status was greatly oversimplified, even as Cagen paid lipservice to the 'diversity' of our community. It irritated me that she wanted to give every single person the QA label and that she felt it so necessary to stress that "just because QAs enjoy intense female friendships doesn't mean they're lesbians!" The author also came across as really judgmental in certain passages--in an attempt to be funny, no doubt. There was nothing really new to me here, but still, I have to get a copy of this book for myself just because I'm so happy that it exists. I'm excited to see what sort of movement could come out of it and also to see how this idea could be expanded and improved (there's definitely room for both). Despite my complaints about it being oversimplified, I did like the fact that it was really accessible.
