Caught today at the mini-meet at Cafe Venezia. Have fond memories of the film, not least due to Johnny Depp's roguish gypsy character - awakened some latent memory of David Essex in his gypsy scarf n earring I think!
Think this is just the type of book to transport you on some balmy evening to a magical place so will probably save to read until the summer, but look forward to very much.

Picked this up off the shelf just over a week ago and finished this morning, and enjoyed every bit of it. Had seen the film first but as is usually the case, the book is better. I loved all the characters, especially Guillaume with his little dog Charly and the grand matriarch Madame Armande. Thought their part in the story very moving. And Anouk's little imaginary rabbit 'Pantoufle', what a lovely name! And I think I could read a whole book about the life of river gypsies. (Surprise, the rogue gypsy 'Roux' has long red hair!)
I worked for a time many years ago for a man who owned a French patisserie in London, our office based below the shop, next to the ingredients storeroom. This book really brought back the memory of all those intoxicating smells that used to waft about the place, and of the head patissier 'Phillip' who seemed to lived in his own imaginary world alot of the time. Guess there is a “kind of sorcery in all cooking”… A great read, will probably release at the Uncon in Brighton if I don’t find somewhere more themed beforehand.

Journal Entry 7 by treborwise from Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire United Kingdom on Saturday, April 18, 2009
Saw the film a long time ago which was excellent - picked up the book at the Pplmary restaurant in Polperro. Deeply profound in some places and very amusing in others - just like life.
