I think that Captain's Courageous by Rudyard Kipling is perhaps one of the finest books written regarding the evolution of a young man into adulthood. Kipling's use of dialogue and his apt portrayal of Glouchester fishermen from America is amazing, and his only work set in the States. His ability to focus on the nuances of individuals and the breakdown of stereotypes has set him not only as a master of his time, but of all time. His works are to be treasured and read again and again. I hope that you, o' anonymous reader, will enjoy him as much as I.
