Moonshine, Monster Catfish and Other Southern Comforts

A wonderfully entertaining exploration of the strange habits, customs, traditions and obsessions of the American South, in the tradition of The Lost Continent and The Orchid Thief.
What a strange book!
Prior to reading this I had a rather romanticised view of Americas South (well not including the whole slavery issue). After reading this book I am left with an abiding sense of the strangeness of the south. There is one point in the book where the author explains American history..."American history, some say, could be written in terms of whiskey as well as wars and wandering tribes and the result might say more about the American character - about the perennial battle between liberty and the rule of law." and it makes a whole lot of sense. As the saying goes "Only in America".

Sending this one out to a friendly Bookcrosser on the other side of the world :)
Hmmm, this will probably reach its intended destination by Christmas. I went to the post office to post it off and was absolutely flabbergasted when the woman behind the counter told me that it would cost me $22 for a 700g parcel to the UK. Apparantly Economy Air Mail is no longer available. My only other alternative was Sea Mail and it takes 3 MONTHS!!!
So HAPPY CHRISTMAS FOXED!!!

Received from Bodhi as a swop - looking forward to the read..
Blimey, just saw your journal entry about postage costs: thanks ever so much and I promise to read it soon!

Sorry Bodhi, its taken a bout of pneumonia to get me reading this book we traded! And well worth the wait, a fascinating trawl through the fascinations and obsessions of a diverse bunch of southern Americans - coon-hunting and pig intestines, anyone? (Actually in the English West Country we eat chitterlings too). Bilger gets out there, talks, eats, and engages with his subjects in a non-patronising way that builds into a celebraton of the quirky, the non-mainstream and downright rustic. How long will these unregarded folkways continue - my Dad tickled trout in streams, and we swam as kids in local rivers and pools - I don't see kids doing these things now.
In the post to Ladymaggie - enjoy!
Cheers Foxed!!!! Thank you for sending this great book my way!!!! Book arrived safely here in Brooklyn,NYC USA today....
