The back cover blurb:

"The longest continuous footpath in the world, the Appalacian Trail stretches along the East Coast of the United States, from Georgia to Maine, through some of the most arresting and celebrated landscapes in America.

At the age of forty-four, in the company of his friend Stephen Katz (last seen in the bestselling Neither Here Nor There), Bill Bryson set off to hike through the vast tangled woods which have been frightening sensible people for three hundred years. Ahead lay almost 2,200 miles of remote mountain wilderness filled with bears, moose, bobcats, rattlesnakes, poisonous plants, disease-bearing ticks, the occasional chuckling murderer and - perhaps most alarming of all - people whose favourite pastime is discussing the relative merits of the external-frame backpack.

Facing savage weather, merciless insects, unreliable maps and a fickle companion whose profoundest wish was to go to a motel and watch The X-Files, Bryson gamely struggled through the wilderness to achieve a lifetime's ambition - not to die outdoors."

This is a great book! I have enjoyed all the books I have read by Bill Bryson, except "The Lost Continent".

I found it quite mind-boggling that people take months off to spend the time walking a 2000+ mile trail, up mountains and through swamps, carrying everything they need to survive, just for the pleasure of doing it.

Bryson writes well and at no stage does this book flag or become in any way boring. I take my hat off to the long-suffering Mrs Bryson who was prepared to drive to remote locations to drop Bryson and Katz next to the Appalachian Trail and pick them up again after days, weeks or months ... whatever. Bryson and Katz were not "through hikers" and only walked about 40% of the trail in a couple of stages, but all power to them for even attempting it.

A really enjoyable read. Both Bryson & Stephen Katz have a hilarious turn of phrase at times. There were some laugh-out-loud moments for me. It all seemed like damned hard work, the sort of thing you'd do just to say you'd done it. I loved his dig at the Parks Services - let's get some more construction going in this here forest, eh!

Thanks, pinkozcat. I'll get this off to kalasue ASAP.

I really enjoyed Bill Bryson as always. This one did pall in the middle for me a bit, but luckily he moved away from the history and geography lessons just in time... Bryson is the master of self-deprecation - I would dearly love to meet, or even see a photo of Katz - I wonder how he feels about his depiction in the books.

Thanks pinkozcat for the opportunity to read this.

I somehow forgot to journal this one when it arrived last week. I actually finished it in a day as I couldnt put it down - not easy to do with a destructive two year old, an absent husband and nasty morning sickness- so it must have been good! This is the first Bryson I have read and I now intend to read everything he has written. I loved it, all of it. There was one memorable section where he wrote about trees with such awe and reverence that it moved me to tears. Initially I could not believe he was setting out with Katz (his name brought to mind Col. Kurtz from Hearts of Darkness - perhaps there was some similarity in their madness...). I thought he was doomed but they managed a great deal more than I thought they would. Thanks pinkozcat for the chance to discover Bill Bryson :)
