Picked up cheaply in a second hand shop.
A thoughtfully written novel, shortlisted for loads of awards. Set in the early 20th Century it's part the story of Fairly a Fellow at a Cambridge University college and part the story of Daisy who lives in a poor part of London. It has some interesting things to say about religious belief, science and social inequalities - lots of revealing insights into life in the poorer parts of Britain at the time.
