OMIGOD! I was completely horrified while reading about what this poor boy endured. Why was he singled out? It is so sad. He must have had a powerful spirit to have overcome all of the abuse he suffered through. I wonder what sort of men his brothers grew up to be. Are they psychologically damaged from witnessing all of this torture? I can't imagine...

I had to give my kids lots of hugs after I read this book. Kids really do need to know that they are loved. I highly recommend this book. Thank you for sharing this book Apikoros. I read it in one afternoon. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I am sorry I held on to it for so long, but I was in the middle of a 642-page book when it arrived. I have already contacted saidenuj and I will pass the book along as soon as I get an address.

I had heard of Pelzer's story before but never actually read it for myself. Glad I did. How sad, all that he had to endure as a child. I'm still mystified why the other sons were not treated in a similar manner. What did his mother see in Dave that was so horrible? I understand that she wasn't rational due to alcohol abuse, but she continued to single him out for her horrendous mistreatment. I'm still angry with Dave's father as well. As a parent, I fail to comprehend his behavior too. It's a wonder that Dave even survived to tell his tale.

Thanks for including me in this ring. I also read it in a single afternoon. I've PMd Aberpeter and will send the book along as soon as possible.

Journal Entry 9 by Aberpeter from Renton, Washington USA on Sunday, August 27, 2006
Wow! What an awful childhood Dave had. As a parent, I cannot even imagine treating my own children in such a horrible manner. As a teacher, I am baffled as to how his teachers did not recognize the signs of child abuse. The nurse was apparently keeping tabs on his bruises - did it take that long for social services to be convinced that Dave was a victim of abuse? Thank goodness he was finally taken out of the hell-hole he was living in. Reading the book raises some questions for me:
*Why was he the only one abused?
*Was his father spineless or was his mother abusing him, too (emotionally?)
*What happened to his mother? Did she lose the other boys?
*What happened to his brothers? As adults, how do they treat their loved ones?
*Why did it take so long for social services to finally step in and take Dave away?
Now I want to read the other two books in this series to find the answers to my questions.

Thanks Apikoros for sharing the book.
