A little convoluted at first, but the author lays down a good background of Russia at the time of the change-over to free market and the criminal forces that are/were active. If you HAVE to have a happy ending, then you should probably avoid this, although the ending is happy in a Russian novel "happy" kind of way.
And no, the author isn't Russian, but he does seem to get it right.
