In a time when technology can manipulate moods and emotions, death holds the promise of ultimate ecstasy...

They died with smiles on their faces. Three apparent suicides: a brilliant engineer, an infamous lawyer, and a controversial politician. Three strangers with nothing in common -- and no obvious reasons for killing themselves. Police lieutenant Eve Dallas found the deaths suspicious. And her instincts paid off when autopsies revealed small burns on the brains of the victims. Was it a genetic abnormality or a high-tech method of murder? Eve's investigation turned to the provocative world of virtual reality games -- where the same techniques used to create joy and desire could also prompt the mind to become the weapon of its own destruction...

Fourth installment in the series.

Robb has established a predictable pattern in this futuristic cop series. This installment breaks little new ground. The crime and the perpetrator are both connected in some fashion to Eve's personal life. We are introduced to the criminal in an early scene, although we don't necessarily know it at the time. And Eve and Roarke argue a little, have sex a lot, and wrestle with their personal demons in the meantime.

The plot is more imaginative than in the previous three, dealing with advanced video game and virtual reality technology. Installments two and three were standard-issue romantic thriller plotlines: no surprises. This novel is more what I hoped to see when I read the first of the series, although the plotting is fairly heavy-handed -- I spotted the no-goodnik at first introduction. Still, deeper insight into Eve's background made the story hum along. I wonder when Robb will get around to telling us Roarke's back story.

Reasonably well-done for its genre, although I tended to grimace at one excessively graphic sex scene and some of the potty-mouthed dialogue. And I've started playing a game as I read this series: discover the bad guy before the story makes it obvious.
