This came to me as part of a large batch of books left at my office. I've just noticed that it is based in Walberswick, which I know well as it is on the Suffolk 'Heritage Coast' near where I live - I like reading books with a local interest, so I will get around to this at some point

(13/10) I have to be honest; I only read this because it is set near where I live, about 15 miles up the ‘Heritage Coast’ in Suffolk…so I know Walberswick, Dunwich, Southwold and the glorious beachs, marshes and lowland heath which Hemmingway so lovingly describes. The book is a very simple forbidden/unrequited period love story with the backdrop of Queen Victoria’s jubilee and a long hot summer. Isobel Heatherington is spending the summer at a house in Walberswick with her 3 daughters and aunt, and meets up with painter Philip Speer with quite disasterous consequences – well based on the prevailing moral code and restricted behaviour, there is no crime committed (and very little action!), only a stolen glance, a dance, a chaste kissing of hands and a lot of soul-searching. The end result is pleasant enough, not great literature, but atmospheric and quite an acccomplished first novel.
