This novel tells the story of Tashi, a minor character from The Color Purple. I borrowed this from the library about ten years ago, but can't remember much of the plot, so am looking forward to reading it again.

This is going to my NSSEBS partner, who is welcome to keep it as part of her permanent collection.

I started to read this before sending it off to my NSSEBS partner, but I'm afraid I lost interest. I can understand why I didn't get my own copy of this novel before. While it was interesting to read more about the characters from The Color Purple, the narrative was very disjointed and I felt the plot lacked pace and drive. I would have liked more details about what happened to Tashi and the other characters and fewer "poetic" musings.

I hope the next reader enjoys this more than I did. In the post for the NSSEBS today.

I read my own, now lost, copy of this book when it was first published having heard Alice Walker speak about and against the practice at the heart of the novel in Birmingham Town Hall.

It is a powerful and gory book, not for the squeamish, which tells the story of Tashi - a character from The Colour Purple filling in the gaps of what happened to her during the time of that earlier story and conntinuing it through to her death. I shared Tashi's mother's frustration at her decision and sympathised with Adam in his desire to protect and cherish her even as her grip on an objective reality vanished.

Moving, but difficult.
