The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream
10 journalers for this copy...
I have had this book on my TBR shelf for a month or so and now I am going to read it and send it off to a BookCrosser in Germany. It will be a quick read as the book is quite slim, though I am assured the message is deep.
Not really sure what to make of this book. It is indeed a wonderful read, however the message I come away with is one that is a bit disturbing; follow your dreams though your journey may leave others with sorrow. Perhaps it is just that I am at a point in my life where I want to follow a dream, but in doing so I will make others sad.
I have another book on my To Be Read shelf about following dreams..."Chasing Rumi." I shall read that and compare the two books.
In the meanwhile, this is heading off to Regensburg, Germany, one of my favorite places from a European trip in the summer of 2000.

Recieved the book today. What a nice surprise and many thanks to Zmrzlina! I´ll check back when I got around reading it!
Follow your dream! Although this seems to be the premise of the book it is not the only lesson to be learned. This little book provides us with the everyday wisdom of life beautifully set in a fable about a young spanish shepherd who ventures out to find a treasure promised to him in a recurrent dream. Needless to say this treasure upon finding isn´t anything like he imagined it to be.
What makes reading this book really worthwhile is the simple yet beautiful language, the simple truths of life it is teaching you and the symbolism the author is working with (well, if you like symbolism).
In my opinion it´s not 'deeply' thought provoking but nevertheless a nice, short and somewhat enlightening little book.
Will release this one at our first BC meeting in Munich. I´m sure it will find another pleased reader. Many thanks to zmrzlina again!

It's a very touching and inspiring fable. One of my favourite books.
I will send it to "nefertari" in the United Kingdom.

Received this book this morning - thanks so much to Cora-Huebsch :-) Hopefully I will get round to reading it soon.
I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this book - I really loved it. It's a nice, short, easy read, beautifully written so that the little truths and the fable of it come across without you having to think too deeply at all. (It puts me in mind of Jostein Gaarder's books in that respect.)
Aside from that, I get the impression that different people get different things out of reading it. For me, it was a book about trust and self-discovery - probably because I am at a stage in my life where such things are important to me. Certainly a book for anyone who believes in following their dreams!
I think this deserves to travel on to someone else to enjoy as much as I have (while I think about buying a copy for my personal collection...)

Just received today! I'd forgotten it was coming!
What a nice surprise :)
What a nice surprise :)
I enjoyed this very much and have also read Zmrzlina's Chasing Rumi..but won't make a comparison so as not to ruin it for her.
For some reason, I expected the message of The Alchemist to be more subtle. It was very clear, no way could it be missed. Even as Santiago is on his journey he is interpreting his actions, his words for us so it is impossible to "miss" what he's saying.
I did enjoy the book on many levels - as an adventure of a young man, as an adventure of nature, as a search for self.
I'm glad I read this.
Its promised to poohbear3 next so Santiago will continue his journey...I'd like to read it one more time before poohbear3 passes it along so I can re-read it after having thought about its message.
Thanks to everyone before me for sharing!

A nice simple little story that you didnt have to look for the hidden lesson in it. Taking this to the mini meetup tonight and I will release it to someone or back to Cestmoi.

Received this book at a meet-up last week. I plan to start reading it in the near future.
I received this copy from a fellow bookcrosser and another copy from a friend. I suppose I needed to read it. I really enjoyed the story as it was light and to the point. It reminds me of the Celestine books.
I'm releasing it back to cestmois in Toronto per her request.
Enjoy!

The last time this book was on offer I passed, but have since learned more about it and wanted to read it. Thanks cestmoi for getting it for me to read.
Cestmoi gave this to me today before we started our wanderings around the Word on the Street, came home with good books and had a great day.

The story of a young man pursuing his dream and following his own path to his personal treasure, despite obstacles in his way.
A nice little story about listening to your heart and following your dreams.
"It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

Received from Penhaligon, very intrigued by the story. I will give my opinion on it after reading it.
The Alchemist was a very good fable about the achievement of our personal legends. It had a lot of good lessons to learn, and it kept me interested the whole way through.
Picked this up at our little get together on the weekend. I have read it but wanted a re-read. Cestmoi has requested it again after I am finished, before we set it free.
