Charles A. Lindbergh defeats FDR for the Presidency in 1940. Lindbergh, the "Lone Eagle," captured the country's imagination by his solo Atlantic crossing in 1927 in the monoplane, Spirit of St. Louis, then had the country's sympathy upon the kidnapping and murder of his young son. He was a true American hero: brave, modest, handsome, a patriot. According to some reliable sources, he was also a rabid isolationist, Nazi sympathizer, and a crypto-fascist. It is these latter attributes of Lindbergh that inform the novel.

I just started reading without reading about the book first. It looked autobiographical to me but then I started wondering why I had never heard about Lindbergh running for president :-) ...I felt a little like the people must have felt who thought the aliens had landed when they listened to Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" on radio...

That's the first Philip Roth I read and I like it a lot.
Maybe the most impressing aspect for me is the fictional history. I never thought about it, but with every novel about Nazi Germany you always know how it is going to end - not for the individual character but as a whole. Early on you think, no, please, leave! ...but here you are deprived of that supernatural knowledge and you can relate much better to the situation of what-the-hell-should-we-do? Are we just paranoid?
This is a really good book.

I wondered where this was going to end... somewhere JFK is mentioned so that was a hint there would be a way back to "normal history" and I don't want to spoil anything so I just have to say the show down was extremely well done. I really appreciate flawless if a little absurd logic as in this book.
