River, cross my heart

I was expecting this book to be better than it was. It starts with a scene down at the Potomac River, in Georgetown, a suburb of predominantly black families in Washington DC in the 1920’s. Clara and Johnnie May are down at the Three Sisters with their friends swimming. Johnnie May is a confident swimmer but Clara is not, so Clara is sitting a log on the water’s edge and Johnnie May is swimming, and did not hear or see Clara fall into the water. Despite Johnnie May diving into the river to try and save her little sister she could not find her in the murkiness of the Potomac River. This novel is about the impact of Clara’s drowning on her parents, Johnnie May and other family members.
